Pope Francis released his most recent Apostolic Exhortation “Rejoice and be glad” on March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph. Pope Francis may have taken his namesake from St. Francis of Assisi, but this particular document on the universal call to holiness is absolutely dripping with the spirituality of another Francis, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, St. Francis de Sales. Four hundred years ago St. Francis was also urging people to pursue holiness, no matter what state of life they were living: single, married, widowed, mother, army commander, monk, etc. Pope Francis has taken up the same sermon and put it in modern day language.
